Facebook group takes aim at Gov. Pence over abortion law

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A Facebook group is taking an interesting approach in a stance against the state’s new abortion law. And Governor Mike Pence (or at least his staffers) is taking the brunt of dozens of phone calls.

“Periods for Pence” is a group aimed at protesting HEA 1337. It’s a bill that was recently signed by Pence that prohibits abortions based on the gender or race of a fetus, or the possibility of a disability.

The group says to, “Let Governor Mike Pence known what you think about his intrusive HEA 1337 bill. Women should have the right to make their own medical decisions.”

Facebook users have called and talked to staffers about their monthly period. Some have posted their conversations on the page.

The site administrator gave the following statement to NewsChannel 15, the woman wishes to remain anonymous.

I started this page to give a voice to the over 50% of women in this state who did NOT vote for Pence. I simply feel that making women bear another burden of deciding whether or not to bury or cremate the results of a miscarriage shows a certain lack of empathy on the Governor’s part. We may not accomplish anything, but I wanted these women to have an opportunity to let their voices be heard-and they are. Hopefully people who signed this bill will know that we are paying attention and that we will be more vigilant and more vocal in the future.

The page was created Tuesday and has already amassed more than 5,000 “likes.”

The group also has a Twitter page.

Abortion rights experts believe Indiana’s new abortion law will end up being contested in courts. Planned Parenthood of Indiana says it will sue to stop the law.

The law takes effect July 1.
