Family remembers woman found dead in parking lot on city’s east side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Family members are remembering a woman, who police said was found dead in an abandoned parking lot on the east side of Indianapolis.

It happened early Friday morning last week near Oriental and East Washington Street.

The family of 65-year-old Margaret Means said she was found stabbed to death.

“I want to say whoever done this to my mom will you please come forward because I can’t handle this,” said Julie Means, the victim’s daughter.

Means told 24-Hour News 8 she has been trying to get a hold of her mother and had no idea she was living on the streets until last week.

“She was a sweet lovable person,” said Means. “She didn’t do no harm to nobody.”

Means and her daughter went back to the place where her mom was found dead less than a week before Thanksgiving.

“She was a good cook and this year I won’t get to have Thanksgiving with my mom,” she said.

Means said the two spent time together last month.

“October 3rd we went out to eat,” she said. “I spent two hours with her and all we did was hug and now I can’t do that.”

The investigation began when police got a call for a welfare check around 3:30 a.m.

Someone passing through the area noticed a woman wrapped in a blanket with blood coming out of it. The Marion County Coroner’s Office ruled her death a homicide. She died from being stabbed.

“It’s just got me all tore up, all tore up,” she said.

Means said the chaplain showed up to her house later that morning and told her what happened. She also learned that her mom was homeless.

“I started crying right off the bat,” she said.

Means said her mom told her she was doing well and had her own place. Her focus now is to bury her mom and to find justice.

“I want to find the killer that done this,” she said. “I want him to pay for what he’s done to me and my family.”

Friends set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to help pay for the funeral. Click here if you would like to help.
