FDA recalls 2 thyroid medications over contamination concerns

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The FDA has recalled two thyroid medications over risks of contamination. 

Westminster Pharmaceuticals has voluntarily recalled their thyroid tablets, Levothyroxine and Liothyronine, in the following dosages: 

• 15 mg
• 30 mg
• 60 mg
• 90 mg
• 120 mg 

The recalled products are packed in 100-count bottles with specific lot and expiration dates. 

According to the FDA, the products are being recalled as a precaution because they were manufactured using active pharmaceutical ingredients that were sourced prior tho the FDA’s Import Alert of Sichuan Friendly Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., which as a result of an inspection were found to have deficiencies with Current Good Manufacturing Practices.

Westminster Pharmaceuticals says they have not received any reports of adverse events from the affected products. 

Because the products may be used in the treatment of serious medical conditions, officials say people taking the recalled medication should continue taking it until they have a replacement product.
