Fifth-grade student dies after fight at elementary school

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A ten-year-old girl is dead after a classroom fight in South Carolina.

Our sister station WCBD says she died after receiving care at MUSC following a classroom fight at Forest Hills Elementary in Walterboro.

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the news Wednesday morning just before 10:40 a.m.

Earlier this week, the school said a female student suffered injuries and was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina for medical treatment.

In a Facebook post, following news about the child’s death, the Colleton County School District said the student passed away Wednesday at 9:39 a.m.

“We are devastated by this news, and we want our communities to keep their thoughts and prayers with the student’s family at this time.”

Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey identified that student as 10-year-old RaNiya Wright.

Harvey said an autopsy would be performed on Friday.

District officials said they want to continue focusing on providing needed support services to students, teachers, staff and the community while also proving updates on the sheriff’s office investigation.

The district then decided to temporarily suspend their Facebook page, which had been providing limited information, so that they can “focus on providing care that our stakeholders need.”

Details about the incident have been minimal.
