Firefighters working to make Henry County homes safer

HENRY COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – After a fire killed a 52-year-old man and his 4-year-old granddaughter, firefighters in Henry County are hoping to prevent another tragedy.

On Tuesday, the Red Cross and firefighters from all Henry County fire departments came together to talk about partnering and raising money to be able to offer free smoke detectors in all homes in the area.

The morning after the fatal fire, a volunteer firefighter from Lewisville reached out to the Red Cross to create the “Home Fire Safety” campaign.

The goal is to get enough volunteers together to take a whole day and install, and or test smoke alarms in every house in Henry County. Firefighters hope the effort will keep tragedy from striking another home.

Safety Officer Heather Logan from the Lewisville Volunteer Fire Department, says this fire moved a lot of her colleagues.

“The firefighters that were on scene that night were obviously shaken,” said Logan. “They had been there when that little girl came out of the house and while they were trying to resuscitate her and then they watched her drive off in the ambulance knowing full well that her grandfather was still in that house and couldn’t be rescued at the time.”

Firefighters met at Tri-Central High School, they are asking for volunteers and donations to raise money for smoke detectors.
