Fishers developing plan to support those suffering from mental illnesses

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) – This week is the start of a collaborative effort among Fishers community leaders who want to support anyone suffering with a mental illness

In 2014, Fishers EMS, fire and police officers took 157 people to a mental health facility so they wouldn’t harm themselves or others. The goal this year is to reduce the number of reported calls.

Mayor Fadness is working with the fire department, the Fishers Police Department and Community Health Network to come up with resources. Fadness wants to make these resources available to people in need.

“One in every four people, every year, will have a mental or substance abuse disorder. That is nothing to be embarrassed over,” Suzanne Clifford with Community Health Network said.

“There are a lot of people in quiet despair. We need to figure out how to reach them. Mental health calls are a high priority for us we end up sending multiple officers to,” Mitch Thompson with the Fishers Police department said.

“I believe everyone knows someone who has anxiety or deals with depression. It’s important to reach out and talk to someone, doing that is the first step. You can talk to a teacher, friend, family member or a pastor,” Fishers City Council member Todd Zimmerman said.
