Fleeing motorist in crash thought he had pending warrant; he didn’t

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — A multiple vehicle crash occurred Wednesday night on Pendleton Pike in Lawrence after police attempted a traffic stop and the motorist fled.

The crash occurred about 8:35 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Pendleton Pike just southwest of the Interstate 465 overpass.

One person received injuries not considered to be life-threatening. The injury did not involve a police officer.

Gary Woodruff, deputy chief with Lawrence Police Department, said a patrol car attempted to make a traffic stop on North Franklin Road but the motorist drove off. The short chase ended with the fleeing car and at least one other vehicle crashing. The man driving the fleeing car fled on foot from the crash but was taken into custody moments later by police.

Woodruff said the reason the man fled was not immediately clear. Police were continuing to gather information on the motorists in the crash.
