Former Grant County Sheriff’s Dept. lieutenant charged with theft, official misconduct

MARION, Ind. (WISH) – A former lieutenant with the Grant County Sheriff’s Department faces a number of charges.

According to the Indiana State Police, 42-year-old Shelby Taylor has been charged with theft, official misconduct and possession of a controlled substance as a result of a criminal investigation.

Police say that Grant County Sheriff Reggie Nevels requested an investigation on Aug. 7 to look into a string of thefts from the Grant County Sheriff Department’s evidence room.

The findings of that investigation showed a number of things, including that Taylor was one of three employees had access to that secured area, that between March 11, 2015 and April 2, 2018, he took medication from the evidence room and then completed paperwork that indicated the medication had either been destroyed or was being tested by the lab, according to ISP.  However, police say there was no evidence that the medication had been destroyed or was being tested.

Taylor has resigned from the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.
