Free summer camp offered for teen boys

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Just a couple of weeks away from summer, a free camp for teen boys is looking to fill about 30 spots.

The Good News Boys Home 40-Day Challenge is a camp developed by Good News Ministries. Each year, the group takes about 40 teenage boys between the ages of 13-17 to camp at a 145-acre property in Reelsville, Indiana.

The camp takes boys away from negative influences, such as gangs, drugs, neglect and domestic violence and aims to help them to make better decisions through spiritual, educational and vocational training.

Once at the camp, four boys are assigned to each cabin with a counselor. They get the chance to go whitewater rafting, ride ATVs and learn life skills. Instructors teach the campers about carpentry, where the teens build structures. They also learn about welding and even plumbing.

“The program focuses on mentoring young men for work ethic for personal discipline and biblical training and just job skills,” said Ben Ellingson, an organizer with the 40-Day Challenge.
