Fundraiser planned for mom shot at Indianapolis hotel

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Family and friends of an Indianapolis woman shot by the father of two of her kids are holding a fundraiser for her this weekend.

Sarah McKinney, 24, was shot while she was working at the Courtyard Marriott on Southport Crossings Drive on April 16. The mother of three was shot in her hips and her spine. She has no feeling in her legs and has to use a walker.

Police said Paul Thompson, 38, was the shooter. The two were in the process of breaking up at the time of the shooting, and McKinney had recently filed a restraining order.

The two were both employees at the hotel, but were working opposite shifts.

Her family said she remembers him raising the gun. She ran and that’s when her family said she was shot.

“Scary. At that point I didn’t know if she was alive or going to survive. Very upsetting,” McKinney’s grandma Vickie New said.

After he left the hotel, police said Thompson then went to the home of a man named Darryl Nichols and shot him multiple times.

Thompson was eventually caught in Illinois. He faces two counts of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.

Because of the shooting, Sarah is not able to work and her medical bills are piling up. A fundraiser will be held on Sunday at Lockerbie Pub located at 631 East Michigan from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The family has also set up a GoFundMe account for donations.
