Girl Scouts donate cookies to teachers, invite families for outdoor fun around central Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Girl Scouts of Central Indiana wants to donate a package of Girl Scout cookies to staff members at all central Indiana schools.
It’s all part of the Girl Scouts Love Teachers campaign. The scouts typically thank community heroes every cookie season, but this year they expanded to show appreciation to health care workers and others on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Danielle Shockey, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, has her own close connection to our local educators: “I was a teacher and a principal for 20 years. When I think about heroes and the front line, I think of our teachers and our educators and our school leaders and support staff.”
Shockey says 900 schools have already signed up for the campaign. Cookies will be delivered Aug. 3-21.
Girl Scouts of Central Indiana is also hosting more than 140 summer kite-flying parties called “Soaring Into Girl Scouts.” During these outdoor events across 45 counties, the scouts will showcase to girls and their families what they are all about.
Families will get a crash course in the Girl Scouts leadership experience during the parties, using flying kites to teach about STEM, entrepreneurship and life skills.
“I hope they have a little bit of fun, I hope they learn a little bit also, I hope they, like me, are really thankful for the opportunity to get out of the virtual space,” Shockey said.
To add incentive, every event will hold a drawing and a random winner will get a year supply of cookies.
“We just hope they come and feel like they’ve done something good as a family together, maybe a learn a little bit about Girl Scouts and maybe win some cookies,” Shockey said. “We hope it brings those smiles.”
