Health expert weighs in on swimming safety in COVID-19 pandemic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Memorial Day weekend is just days away and, if the weather cooperates, many families could be headed to the community pool.

However, health experts have a few tips for people to protect themselves from the coronavirus should they decide to venture out

Poolside safety is of upmost importance during the COVID-19 pandemic and extra precautions are critical, Dr. Kristen Kelly, director of infection prevention at IU Health, told News 8.

“If you do choose to go to a community pool, try to socially-distance by keeping chairs 6 feet apart. Another option is going during off-peak times so there are less people. And try to stay outside instead of heading inside the clubhouse. Fresh air helps to dissipate the virus if you happen to be near someone infected.”

If you must go inside the clubhouse or locker room, wear a mask, Kelly adds. Also, be sure look at the pool’s illness policy as it relates to COVID-19. Many community pools are making changes to their operations and it’s good to talk to the director to see what safety measures they are applying to protect visitors.

Finally, there are a few things you can do if you want to go above and beyond.

“You can bring your own towels and chairs. That way you can choose a spot to ensure social distancing. Also, pack your own snacks. This helps parents and kids avoid crowded lines where people are in close contact with one another.”
