Hero teen rescues dog from icy Indianapolis pond

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Authorities say an Indianapolis teenager saved a family’s dog from a frozen pond.

It happened Thursday night on the south side, near Southport and Bluff roads.

Fire officials say “Lazy,” an 8-year-old poodle, wandered onto a pond around 7 p.m. They say she fell through the ice and was trying to hang on.

The dog’s owners called 911. As they waited for emergency crews to show up, officials say a 15-year-old neighbor heard the commotion and came outside to help.

Officials say the teen used a paddle boat to go out onto the icy pond, wearing only a t-shirt, shorts and boots. He got the dog into the boat, but then got stuck on the water.

Officials say he spent over a half hour on the pond in the freezing cold before fire crews were able to pull the boat to shore using a rope.

The teen and the dog are expected to be OK.
