Human case of West Nile Virus detected in southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) – The Indiana State Department of Health says a human case of West Nile Virus has been detected in Indiana.

On Aug. 6, the department says one person tested positive for West Nile Virus in Vanderburgh County in southern Indiana.

In addition to the one human case, nearly 170 mosquitoes in 27 Indiana counties have tested positive for West Nile.

“This is the time of year when people are at greatest risk for West Nile virus disease,” said State Health Commissioner Kris Box, M.D. “All Hoosiers should take precautions to prevent mosquito bites. You can also reduce the risk for yourself and your neighbors by eliminating mosquito breeding grounds from your property.”

West Nile Virus can result in result in a fever, headache, body aches, swollen lymph glands or a rash.
