IMPD continues investigation into deadly south side shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police are investigating whether a deadly south side shooting was self-defense, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials.

Officers found a 26-year-old shot on the 1500 block of Villa Avenue late Monday night. Tuesday afternoon, police said they’re still trying to piece together exactly what happened before that man was shot.

A police report said officers initially responded to a burglary in progress.

Police said they found a man on a porch Monday night. Medics took him to Sidney & Lois Eskanazi Hospital, where he died.

Officers said two people-a man and a woman-were inside the home when IMPD showed up.

IMPD has not released the name of the man who died.

People in the neighborhood are left wondering exactly what happened.

“Usually, around here, it’s pretty peaceful,” Richard Brasher said. “We rarely ever get the police called around here.”

“People get out here and they’re roughing in the neighborhood and everything,” Ron Holderfield said. “But they don’t realize how much it takes to try and make a living and make it safe for the kids and everything.”

The Marion County Prosecutor’s office will make the call on whether the shooting was self-defense. If you know anything about what happened, you can call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
