IMPD: Man found shot outside west side restaurant

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials are trying to figure out what led up to a shooting on the city’s west side Wednesday morning that left a man badly hurt.

It happened on West 16th Street, in between North Tibbs Avenue and Lafayette Road, around 3 a.m.

Police say the victim, who is in his 20s, was shot in the stomach and thigh. Police say after the shooting, he and his wife drove to a Popeye’s on West 16th Street, which is where officers responded.

Initial reports from IMPD dispatchers were that the shooting happened during a robbery. Police at the scene said they were working to determine if that was the case. They believe it started with some sort of altercation between the victim and two suspects, during which one suspect shot the victim. Officials say the victim managed to grab the gun from the suspect before they drove off.

According to police, the victim was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. Police said he was alert and talking.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
