IMPD: Off-duty officer involved in deadly crash

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A woman was killed after a motorcycle driven by an off-duty officer crashed in downtown Indianapolis early Friday morning, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials said.

It happened near South West Street and West Washington Street around 2:30 a.m.

Witnesses told police the motorcycle, driven by the off-duty IMPD officer, was traveling westbound on W. Washington St. when the crash happened. They say as the motorcycle approached the curve, the female passenger was thrown from the vehicle and hit a pole. Police say the motorcycle continued for about a block.

Officials at the scene say the officer was injured and, according to witnesses, was seen stumbling back to help the woman. Police say the officer was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials say there’s no indication the officer was intoxicated, but blood will be drawn at the hospital, which is standard protocol in a crash involving serious injury or death.

According to IMPD, the officer was driving his personal, sport-style motorcycle. Officials say there was a helmet on scene, but it’s unclear who was wearing it.

The officer, who officials say can be considered a veteran with the department, has not been named. The woman’s name has also not been released.
