Indiana man charged with shooting at off-duty police officer
CORUNNA, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say a man fired shots at an off-duty police officer who was checking on a suspected break-in in rural northeastern Indiana.
DeKalb County prosecutors filed attempted murder and burglary charges against 21-year-old Tyler Gaiski of Auburn for the Tuesday shooting near the community of Corunna.
The sheriff’s department says the homeowner’s son saw someone inside and called 911. The homeowner called the neighbor who is a Kendallville officer. The (Auburn) Star reports that police say the officer identified himself to a man inside a car, who shot at him.
Police say the officer returned fire as the car drove away and crashed about a half-mile away. Police say Gaiski was arrested in a cornfield.
Gaiski was jailed without bond and court records don’t list a defense attorney.
