Indiana man gets 16 years in fatal shooting of daughter, 5

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) – A Fort Wayne man who pleaded guilty to reckless homicide for fatally shooting his 5-year-old daughter as he was playing with his guns has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull told 38-year-old Toney Keith White II on Friday that his actions leading up to his daughter’s death were “idiotic” and the shooting wasn’t an accident.

The Journal Gazette reports Gull told White that the February shooting death of his daughter, Mya, resulted from “reckless conduct.”

Court documents state that after loading and unloading his guns and playing with their safeties and the triggers, White reloaded one handgun and it discharged Feb. 13, killing the youngster.

White’s attorney, Robert W. Gevers, called the fatal shooting a “tragic, tragic incident.”
