Evansville woman arrested for OWI and failure to secure a child seat correctly

VANDENBURGH CO., IN (WISH) –Troopers with the Indiana State Police on Monday arrested a woman for speeding in a construction zone and that traffic stop ended with the woman under arrest for several charges after troopers pulled her over.

At approximately 7:50 a.m. Trooper Hunter Manning stopped 25 year old Mackenzie Bryant for speeding in the construction zone on US 41 near I-69.

Bryant was behind the wheel when Trooper Manning approached the vehicle and smelled an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Bryant  had her 6 month old child restrained in a forward facing child safety seat in the vehicle but Indiana law states that children less than one-year of age and weighing less than 20 lbs. are required to be restrained in a rear-facing child safety seat. The seat belt was wrapped around the child safety seat, but the seat belt was not secured properly.

A roadside field sobriety test indicated Bryant was impaired and further investigation revealed she had smoked synthetic marijuana earlier the same morning. Bryant refused to submit to a chemical test and she was arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail where she is currently being held on bond on charges of Driving While Intoxicated with a Passenger under the age of 18, Possession of Synthetic Marijuana or Synthetic Look-Alike Substance, Speeding and a Child Restraint Violation.

Department of Child Services took custody of the child.
