Mom warning others after illness puts daughter on life support

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Sabrina McMiller looks refreshed.

It’s been a tough couple of months for the married mother of six.

This fall, her 12-year-old daughter Ke’Mora appeared to be battling the flu. She showed all of the symptoms. After a five day period of rest, KeMora gathered enough strength to attend church. After services were completed, the McMiller’s were heading home when Ke’Mora collapsed.  She wasn’t breathing.

“They were doing chest compressions, she wasn’t moving, she wasn’t responding, she was just lifeless,” said McMiller.

Crews rushed Ke’Mora to Riley Hospital for Children, where she went into cardiac arrest. Doctors placed Ke’Mora on life support. She would spend the next 31 days in the hospital. She got stronger she started walking again.

McMiller was elated, with her daughter’s recovery; however, she still wanted to know what happened to Ke’Mora. She later discovered the teen was diagnosed with Myocarditis. It is commonly known as a inflammation of the heart muscle. Typically a viral infection is the most common cause. Just days before Ke’Mora collapsed, she visited the doctor. McMiller believes if Ke’Mora had an EKG the doctor would have discovered Myocarditis.

McMiller is encouraging parents to ask for an EKG if their child has flu like symptoms but their condition does not improve and they have an abnormal heart rate.

“Ke’Mora had one distinctive symptom that was overlooked, she had an abnormal heart rate,” said McMiller.

During an interview, McMiller gave us insight on how she made it through a very difficult time for her family.

“Family, friends, prayer, scriptures, and more faith, that was on the only way,” said McMiller.

As for Ke’Mora, she has recovered and is back at school.
