Moon Lite Drive-In glows again in Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO) — Thirty years ago, the big screen at what is now the Moon Lite Drive-In Theater went blank.

On Saturday afternoon, hundreds of community members gathered as the screen comes back to life.

“It’s a really surreal moment to see this place come back to life after being closed for 30 years and to see this turnout is amazing,” said Brent Barnhart, owner of Moon Lite Drive-In.

The theater kicked off its grand re-opening with a car show, which added an extra layer of excitement for visitors of the drive-in.

“First car show I’ve ever been to. Brought a 2004 Cadillac. A lot of people were looking at it. I’m pretty excited about being here and seeing all these other great cars,” said Stephen McCall, a Terre Haute resident.

While the car show merely made an appearance Saturday, for the rest of the fall, the Moon Lite Drive-In is here to stay.

“You get to hangout two hours before show time and then spend two to four hours watching movies under the stars,” Barnhart said.

Zach Bignell, whose company helped sponsor this grand opening, said that the chance to be a part of something this special is not an opportunity that he could pass on.

“I think it’s going to drastically effect the area. I mean it’s going to bring a lot of people together, again. You get to be outside, you get to hangout with your family in a nice environment” said Zach Bignell, owner of Bignell Automotive.

The Moon Lite Drive-In will remain open on Fridays and Saturdays for the rest of the season until the first snowfall.
