School bus crash sends 5 to the hospital

LAKEVILLE, Ind. (WISH) -An early morning wreck sent five people to the hopsital Monday morning after a Union-North United School Corporation school bus, with twenty students onboard, was rear-ended by an SUV.

An Indiana State Trooper’s investigation reveals that the school bus was leaving a stop in the 20000 block of Pierce Road after picking up students just before 8 a.m when it was struck from behind by a 2005 Ford Expedition driven by 28 year old Lee Motz of Bourbon, IN.

Four students were transported to the hospital after complaining of pain and all four were treated for minor injuries and later released from Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth, IN.

Motz was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Pierce Road was closed between Michigan Road and Kenilworth until approximately 11:00 a.m. for the crash investigation and removal of the vehicles.

ISP adds that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor but the crash remains under investigation.

The St. Joseph County Police Department, North Liberty Police Department, and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department assisted IPS in invsestigating the accident.
