Teen hurt in explosive crash caught on camera in Sullivan Co.
SULLIVAN CO., Ind. (WTWO) — A teen was hospitalized early Wednesday morning following an explosive crash in Sullivan County.
The accident occurred when a car traveling southbound on U.S. 41 suddenly overtook a southbound off-road type motorcycle with no headlights.
The driver of the car tried to swerve, but sideswiped the slower-moving motorcycle, ejecting the 16-year-old male driver.
The motorcycle tumbled down the roadway where it was struck by a pickup truck. Upon impact, the fuel tank ruptured, and the motorcycle exploded underneath the truck.
The driver of the truck was able to escape without injury.
Sheriff’s officials and firefighters searched nearby fields and ditches for approximately 10 minutes before locating the teen driver.
The teen admitted to driving the motorcycle, however he reported to police that he was scared and hurting, so he took off on foot. He was later admitted to a nearby hospital with head, shoulder and leg injuries. However, his injuries did not appear to be life threatening.
Neither the driver of the car or truck were injured, and neither received citations following the accident.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department was aided by Sullivan City Police, SCAT Ambulance, as well as Thunderbird and Shelburn Fire Departments.
