Indiana part of ‘sham charity’ lawsuit settlement

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Tuesday, Attorney General Greg Zoeller announced Indiana was involved in a lawsuit settlement involving several organizations, accused of being “sham charities”.

Zoeller says the organizations billed themselves as cancer charities and they scammed more than $187 million from people nationwide.

According to a federal complaint, Cancer Fund of America, Children’s Cancer Fund of America, Cancer Support Services and The Breast Cancer Society misused donations, cancer victims were not helped and they were not legitimate charities.

The investigation reveals that much of this activity occurred between 2008 and 2012.

Two of the organizations and five defendants have agreed to a $137 million settlement.

Another part of the settlement includes that the Children’s Cancer Fund and Breast Cancer Society will be dissolved.
