Indiana state trooper dies in crash while responding to call in Tippecanoe County

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) — A state trooper died after a Friday night crash in Tippecanoe County, according to Indiana State Police.

The crash happened around 10:25 p.m. Friday on Old State Road 25 near Stair Road, near Prophetstown State Park between Lafayette and Delphi.

State police identified Trooper Peter Stephan, 27, of Lafayette, as the victim of the crash. He served with Indiana State Police for four years.

Authorities said Stephan was traveling north on Old State Road 25 just south of Stair Road when his patrol car drove around a curve and left the east side of the road, rolled at least once and struck a utility pole.

Trooper Stephan was on his way to assist another trooper in Americus at the time of the crash. Stephan was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This is a tremendously sad day for the entire Indiana State Police family.  We will band together as we always do in support of Trooper Stephan’s family, friends and co-workers”, said Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas G. Carter.

Stephan left behind a wife and a 5-month-old daughter.

The crash remains under investigation.

State police said Saturday that an account has been established through Old National Bank to accept cash donations on behalf of the family of Trooper Stephan.  This is the only account which has been agreed upon by the family, and the opening of additional fundraising accounts is discouraged, state police said. To donate, visit an Old National Bank branch and donate to the Indiana Fallen Heroes Foundation/Peter Stephan.

Gov. Eric Holcomb released the following statement after learning about Stephan’s death:

“Janet and I were heartbroken to learn about the death of Trooper Stephan. We ask that all Hoosiers join us in offering prayers and condolences to Trooper Stephan’s family, friends and colleagues in law enforcement.”
