INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A body found in a stretch of the White River in Morgan County has been identified as a man who witnesses saw go under the water last month in Indianapolis.

The Morgan County coroner on Tuesday identified Terrance Williams, 52, as the man whose body was found Saturday near State Road 144, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.

Witnesses on May 25 said they saw Williams’ canoe flip as they were taking a photo near the White River at Riverside Park, 2420 E Riverside Dr.

“They said that he was trying to swim pretty vigorously,”  Rita Reith, battalion chief with the Indianapolis Fire Department, said on May 25 as the department conducted a search for Williams. “They actually yelled out to him and he acknowledged them.”

Williams’ canoe and lifejackets were recovered just south of the 16th Street dam the night he was seen struggling in the water.
