Indianapolis church thanks first responders, essential workers with free gas and BBQ

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The People’s Church Indianapolis on the west side is hosting two events on Saturday in an effort to thank city frontline heroes.

The first event is a gas giveaway happening at the Phillips 66 gas station on Lafayette Road.

Pastor Eli Johnson with The People’s Church says they have 2,000 gallons of gas to give away, which is enough to fill up about 200 cars.

Following the gas giveaway, volunteers will head back to the church for a pull-up cookout happening at 1 p.m. The church is located at 4726 Century Plaza Rd.

The grills were already firing up shortly after 7 a.m. for the BBQ which started as an idea of wanting to use church donations to help those affected by COVID-19.

And while Pastor Johnson says they would like first responders and essential workers to be first in line, anyone is welcome.

“This is for the community. However you are affected, we want you to know that our church doors may be closed, but the church is not closed,” said Pastor Johnson.

Volunteers will be wearing masks and gloves and will bring the food to your car.
