INDOT: Northbound lanes of I-465 reopen after semi crashes into bridge

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — All northbound lanes of Interstate 465 reopened Wednesday afternoon after Tuesday’s crash.

The crash happened around 8 a.m. Police say a car crusher on the semi trailer malfunctioned, causing it to become too tall and collide with the bridge.

Two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane remain open for U.S. 36 and Rockville Road, but the U.S. 36 and Rockville Road which loops to I-465 northbound will remain closed for a few months.

During the Tuesday overnight hours, clean up ended and demolition and repair work began on the overpass. Four of the bridge’s 14 steel reinforced concrete beams were destroyed in the crash. Also, a half dozen vehicles were damaged and just one person ended up with a broken arm, according to INDOT.

INDOT said there will be new custom concrete bridge beams created, delivered and installed. Winter temperatures may slow down time.
