Injured newborn colt saved from California canyon

FREMONT (KRON) – Police are investigating how a 6-day-old colt ended up stranded and injured in a ravine in Fremont.

Animal Service Officers and the Fremont Fire Department pulled the colt out of Morrison Canyon Sunday afternoon.

Police say the baby animal may have been in the ravine for two days.

Animal Service officers and veterinarian staff have been bottle-feeding the colt while it recovers from an injury to his back leg.

“An investigation is being conducted as to how he got there,” Fremont police said on their official Facebook page.

The horse, who fractured a hip bone, now needs emergency surgery, according to KRON’s Kate Cagle.

The procedure, which is expected to be done at UC Davis, is expected to cost between $7,000 and $10,000.
