Goshen College shares fall reopening plans
GOSHEN, Ind. (Inside INdiana Business) – Goshen College is planning to reopen on-campus classes and residence halls for students this fall. The college has laid out plans to safely resume campus activities that include streamlining the academic calendar as well as creating flexible residential options and classroom formats.
Goshen College says student move-in days will start on Aug. 14, and the first day of classes will be held Aug. 18.
“Our small size, our generously spaced campus and our culture of personal responsiveness are significant advantages as we return to campus,” said Goshen College President Rebecca Stoltzfus. “Protecting each other’s health will require new and specific policies and procedures, as well as changes in habits and behaviors — nothing short of a truly community-wide effort, including altruism on the part of every student and employee. This is required because in this pandemic the health of each individual depends on the health of the community, and vice versa.”
The college is planning to start the fall semester two weeks earlier than originally planned and will replace the fall mid-term break with several mid-semester study days. The college says the fall semester will end by Thanksgiving.
Goshen College says the scheduling changes aim to reduce exposures from students who travel to and from campus during fall and Thanksgiving breaks.
To provide flexible residence options, the college says students who live on campus will be offered the choice to live in a shared room or in a single room at the same price. Rooms will also be set aside for isolation if students must be quarantined due to COVID-19.
Goshen College says accommodations will be made for students and professors who will not be able to be physically present, and class sizes will continue to be small and allow for physical distancing.
The school says it has created a pandemic management team led by Stoltzfus, and administrators will hold a virtual town hall meeting for students and parents on June 4.
