Cinemark closes Greenwood Corners, 2 other Indiana movie theaters
INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) — The state has received more layoff notices as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In separate notices, a movie theater company and a fuel systems manufacturer have detailed layoffs affecting a total of nearly 300 workers.
Texas-based Cinemark USA Inc. says it has closed three Hoosier movie theaters, located in Indianapolis, Mishawaka and Valparaiso. The company says the closures are expected to be temporary, though 150 employees have been laid off.
“The health and safety of our employees, guests and communities is a top priority, and we look forward to once again hiring employees and welcoming moviegoers to experience the magic of cinematic storytelling on our big screens when it is safe to do so,” the company said in a statement to Inside INdiana Business.
Cinemark says all of its employees were paid through March 26, which was the date the layoffs occurred.
Meanwhile, Logansport-based Carter Fuel Systems LLC says it has made the decision to temporarily shut down production and lay off 128 employees on a rolling basis.
“The duration of the mass layoff is unknown at this point, but we currently anticipate beginning recalls starting April 13, 2020,” the company said.
Businesses are required to file WARN Notices with the Department of Workforce Development in the event of a mass layoff. Typically, the notices are required 60 days before the layoffs are set to begin, but many companies have stated the advanced notice was not possible due to the sudden nature of the pandemic and its effect on business.
