Lumina grant to support Goodwill, Cook Medical project
INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) — Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana has received a $250,000 grant from Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation. Goodwill says the grant will support its collaboration with Bloomington-based Cook Medical, which involves a new medical device manufacturing facility currently under construction on Indy’s northeast side.
The facility, plans for which were announced last November, will be operated by Goodwill and manufacture various products for Cook Medical such as drainage catheters and needles. The project will create 100 jobs for nearby residents with an average beginning wage of $15 per hour.
“These funds from Lumina Foundation will help support the ambitious goals of this project, and we’re thankful to have the support of a leading educational institution in this important work,” Kent Kramer, chief executive officer of Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana, said in a news release. “We expect this project to spur additional development and investment in the neighborhood and to provide residents with hope about their future.”
The new facility will be located at the corner of East 38th and Sheridan streets in Indy. The overall project will also include the Indy Fresh Market, a full-service grocery store designed to bring the neighborhood out of a food desert.
The manufacturing facility is expected to open in December. Officials plan to break ground on the Indy Fresh Market in October, with completion expected by July of next year.
