Northern Indiana axle maker celebrates 60 years

ELKHART, Ind. (Inside INdiana Business) — A company founded in Elkhart in 1960 is celebrating its 60th year in business.

Dexter Axle was established by Leonard Dexter to make parts for the housing and recreational vehicle markets. The company began by producing light duty spring axles and components, but grew to make medium duty axles, suspension axles, lube and more. 

Current Dexter leader Adam Dexter is the founder’s grandson and became president and chief executive officer in 2008. The company has since made 12 acquisitions in North America, expanding its products and footprint. Dexter merged with AL-KO Vehicle Technology in 2015 and now operates under parent company DexKo Global, Inc. which has over 7,400 employees in 23 countries.

Dexter remains headquartered in Elkhart and employs over 2,400 in the U.S. and Canada.
