Opening date set for Deaconess Aquatic Center

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Inside INdiana Business) — City officials have announced the opening date for the much-anticipated $27 million Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville. Deputy Mayor Steve Schaefer tells our partners at WEHT-TV a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Oct. 1, with the facility opening to the public three days later.

Plans for the facility were first announced three years ago, with construction officially beginning in Dec. 2019. The facility, located in Garvin Park across from Bosse Field in Evansville, replaces the former Lloyd Pool.

The facility will have a 50-meter competitive pool and separate diving well. There will also be room for nearly 1,000 spectators. Schaefer says the aquatic center will serve both competitive swim teams and recreational swimmers.

“Having a recreational pool, having a splash park, having programs, lessons and other things that will be announced in the future is really critical to the overall mission of the facility and certainly goes back to that ‘E is for Everyone,’” said Schaefer. “We want the facility to be for everyone.”

On Oct. 4, the competitive pool in the facility will open at 5 a.m., with the recreational pool opening at 9 a.m.
