Rolls-Royce enters bid for B-52 engine program
INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) — Rolls-Royce has submitted its proposal for a contract to build engines for the U.S. Air Force. The manufacturer is looking to use its Indianapolis facility to produce its F130 engine as part of the Air Force’s B-52 Commercial Engine Replacement Program.
Rolls-Royce says if it secures the contract, it will produce more than 600 engines for the B-52 bomber.
“Rolls-Royce is excited to formally enter the B-52 re-engine competition, and our proven F130 engine is the perfect fit for the iconic U.S. Air Force aircraft – it’s the perfect size and thrust, and features a modern, efficient and proven design,” said Adam Riddle, executive vice president of business development and future programs for Rolls-Royce. “The F130 engine is the affordable option for the B-52, and has already completed early testing at our Indianapolis facilities, confirming the design and performance are an exact match for the aircraft.”
The manufacturer recently completed a $600 million modernization project at its Indy facility. In February 2019, the company said it would expand production in Indy if it received the Air Force contract and create more than 150 jobs.
The Air Force is expected to award the contract in June 2021.
