State releases 2021 IREAD-3 results
INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) — The Indiana Department of Education has released the results from the spring and summer 2021 IREAD-3 assessment. The results of the test, which is designed to measure the development of foundational reading skills by third grade, shows nearly one in five Hoosier third graders did not achieve reading proficiency.
The results show 81.2% of all students achieved reading proficiency. Additionally, 92.2% of students in non-public schools passed, while 80.3% of students in public schools passed.
The IDOE says in addition to proficiency rates, an analysis of student populations shows “a significant gap widening among Indiana’s racially and ethnically diverse, low-income, special education and English learner students.”
“Through significant research, we know how important it is that children learn to read by third grade, and we take that mission very seriously in Indiana,” Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner said in a news release. “Literacy is vital to ensure Indiana’s students are prepared to explore and experience a variety of pathways, and that’s why we’re working to empower Indiana’s schools and educators with research-based, proven strategies to support our students as they learn to read.”

The IDOE says it is partnering with participating schools to train literacy coaches to help educators implement Science of Reading-based instruction in their classrooms. Training is expected to begin by the summer of 2022.
