IDOE shares student success indicators
INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) — The Indiana Department of Education has presented a draft set of dashboard indicators it says will help track school performance in terms of preparing Hoosier students to graduate. The indicators, which were shared Wednesday with the State Board of Education, is part of the Indiana Graduates Prepared to Succeed (Indiana GPS) initiative.
House Enrolled Act 1514 required IDOE to re-envision how the state defines and measures success in the classroom from kindergarten through high school graduation.
As part of the redesign, developers of the indicators focused on a set of characteristics that could best illustrate a student’s preparation for success after high school.
“Understanding that our students are so much more than a single test score or data point, these measures must be holistic and transparent, placing a focus on the knowledge and skills our students build across all grades as they prepare for their next steps after graduation, whether that’s enrollment, employment or enlistment leading to service,” said Indiana Secretary of Education Katie Jenner.
The characteristics include:
Academic mastery
Career and postsecondary readiness: credentials and experiences
Communication and collaboration
Work ethic
Civic, financial and digital literacy.
IDOE says it is accepting public feedback on the draft set of Indiana GPS indicators. Following the public comment period, a finalized set of prioritized indicators will be submitted to the SBOE in December.
