IPS phased in-person learning gets underway
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis Public Schools is returning to in-person learning Monday morning as part one of a three-phase approach.
“I think they’re excited to get back and see their classrooms in person and our teachers are excited as well,” said Aleesia Johnson, superintendent, Indianapolis Public Schools.
Students grades Pre-K through third grade return Oct. 5, but all students will be remote the week of Oct. 12 for an originally scheduled fall break.
Starting Oct. 19, all students will return to in-person, with grades 7-12 following a hybrid schedule rotating by last name.
IPS is offering a full-time, remote option available for any student at any time if and when the number of positive cases increases.
“We will continue to monitor the number of cases in our schools each week and make that information available,” Johnson said.
On Monday, Superintendent Johnson said the district is taking several safety precautions inside schools such as masks, touchless water fountains, signage and hand sanitizers.
As far as getting to school safely, masks are required in school busses and there will be disinfecting between morning and evening routes.
IPS is adding additional crosswalks and guards to encourage families to walk instead of taking the bus.
IPS is hosting a virtual transportation Q & A Tuesday night at 6 p.m. for families with concerns.
