ISP: 1 dead after van carrying 8 rolls over on I-65

FRANKLIN, Ind. (WISH) — The southbound lanes of Interstate 65 were closed near the 88 mile marker due to a fatal crash for about an hour on Wednesday.

Indiana State Police say the crash shut down the southbound lanes around 1:30 p.m. That’s near the State Road 44 exit. All lanes were back open around 2:30 p.m.

According to ISP, a van carrying eight people rolled over on I-65 near the 88.5 mile marker. Preliminary reports of the crash show that the van went off the roadway to the right side of the road and rolled over. ISP said one passenger was ejected from the van and pronounced dead at the scene.

That passenger has been identified as 53-year-old Miguel Angel-Reyes of Chicago.

ISP said the people in the van worked for Minute Men Staffing in Chicago and were on their way to Kentucky. The van was driven by 45-year-old Eladio Salinas, also of Chicago.

Salinas underwent a breath test for alcohol and no alcohol was present.

The driver of the van was transported to Franciscan St. Francis Health in Indianapolis for head injuries. One patient was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital with an abdominal injury and is listed as stable. The other passengers were transported to Columbus Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

It was not clear what caused the van to leave the road.
