ISP wants to make sure you know how to be safe when passing school buses

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Thousands of kids will be waking up in just a few hours to head to school.

Indiana State Police said they want to make sure you know how to be safe around the buses.

Officers said they get complaints all the time about people breaking the rules when it comes to passing buses.

Indiana State Police said Indiana law requires anyone to stop if they see buses stopped with their red lights flashing and the stop arm extended.

This includes multi-lane highways.

The only exception is when you are going the opposite direction on a divided highway, or a highway with a median.

Officers said failure to stop correctly for a school bus could run you upwards of $10,000.
