Jail nurse who resigned after being charged still working

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) – A former nurse at a southern Indiana county’s jail who resigned after being charged for allegedly pocketing medications intended for inmates is still providing health services for the county.

Clark County Commissioner Jack Coffman said he only recently learned that 62-year-old Denise Brooks was working as a contractor at the county’s juvenile detention center.

Coffman told the News and Tribune he was reviewing June payment claims when he noticed her name among those claims. He said Brooks was also paid by the county in April and May.

Brooks resigned from her county jail post after her February arrest on charges including theft and unlawful possession of prescription drugs. That case is pending.

Her attorney, Larry Wilder, said there’s nothing barring Brooks from working because she still has her license.
