Key races to watch in Indiana this election

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – WISH-TV is taking a look at some of the most important issues and races voters need to know about.

Jim Shella, 24-Hour News 8’s political reporter, took a look at this heated election. He says some of the most interesting races are right here in Indianapolis.

A few seats have opened up, which could mean a change in party representation and ultimately could lead to a change of ebb and flow in the general assembly.

Three races to keep an eye on this election are all state senate races. Senate districts 30, 32 and 36 all have Republican incumbents walking away. District 30’s Scott Schneider retirement is leaving an opening for Democrats.

District 32’s Pat miller is also retiring, leaving another open spot for Democrats to gain a seat. Finally, in District 36, Brent Waltz ran for congress and failed, leaving an open seat down in the southwest portion of Indianapolis.

If they change party, Shella says those seats could be huge in the race for control.

“The big question for races of the General Assembly is: Will the GOP be able to maintain super majorities in both the house of representatives and the state senate? In all likelihood the GOP will maintain super majorities,” Shella explained. “If Eric Holcomb wins the race for governor, Republicans will have absolute control again and Holcomb and his agenda will carry the day. If John Greg wins the race for governor, then you’re going to have to see bipartisan cooperation, you’re going to have to see Republicans get along with the governor and you’re going to have to see the governor get along with Republicans.”

A super majority will be important for Republicans to push their agenda through. Big issues for 2017 will be jobs, the economy, education and pre-K funding, Shella says.
