Trees hit 2 homes, power out after afternoon storms

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Strong storms left at least two homes with trees on them and turned off power and traffic lights. Here is a live blog of activity, including photos of damage.

Wayne Township Fire Department said three people and several pets escaped injured when high winds caused a large section of a tree to fall onto a house in the 1100 block of Delray Drive. That’s northeast of the intersection of West Morris Street and South Girls School Road on the west side.

Indianapolis Fire Department said a tree fell on a house near Lawrence and Fernway streets. That’s a few blocks east of the I-70 exit for Keystone Avenue and Rural Street. No one was home when the tree fell and no one was hurt, an IFD spokeswoman said. Damage was estimated at $60,000.

Multiple traffic lights in Indianapolis and at least one in Whitestown turned into four-way stops after power went out. Indianapolis Power and Light reported 5,780 customers without power at 6:13 p.m. That’s down from a peak of more than 8,700 shortly after the storm.

5:57 p.m.: The Boone County sheriff tweeted that the Whitestown Street Department is aware of malfunctioning traffic lights at Center Drive and Whitestown Parkway.

5:25 p.m.: Indianapolis Power and Light reported 6,631 customers without power. That’s down from a peak of more than 8,700 about a half-hour ago.

5:11 p.m.: WIBC, a News 8 newsgathering partner, reports traffic lights along 46th Street from Butler University to Washington Boulevard. Intersections affected include Meridian and Illinois streets. Expect long delays at what have become four-way stops.

5:10 p.m.: Carmel has canceled its Midtown Movie night. It is rescheduled to 7 p.m. Thursday.

5:05 p.m.: Indianapolis Power and Light reports more than 8,700 without power. Follow our live blog of storm damage.

4:56 p.m.: WIBC, a News 8 newsgathering partner, reports a traffic light out at Fall Creek Road and Shadeland Avenue is creating significant traffic issue. Southbound Shadeland is backed up to 75th Street. Eastbound Fall Creek is backed up “well past the park,” WIBC said in a tweet.

4:44 p.m.: WIBC, a News 8 newsgathering partner, reports traffic lights out on the northeast side, the west side and the north side.

4:34 p.m.: The Pike Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library is without power.

4:33 p.m.: Franklin Youth Football League has canceled all practices.

4:28 p.m.: Duke Energy is reporting more than 800 power outages. The outages are primarily in the Terre Haute, Martinsville and Bedford areas.

4:25 p.m.: The Indianapolis Fire Department is currently responding to several reports of downed power lines.

4:19 p.m.: The Wayne Township Fire Department says a large tree has fallen on a two-story home.

Firefighters are in the 1100 block of Delray Drive. WTFD says the residents and pets escaped the home but serious structural damage occurred.

PREVIOUS: Storms have left thousands of Indianapolis residents without power.

As of 4:10 p.m., IPL is reporting more than 3,800 outages.

A large portion of those are around the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood.
