1 hit, killed by IMPD vehicle on southwest side
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – One person is dead after being struck by an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department vehicle on the city’s southwest side.
The pedestrian was hit just after 11 p.m. Sunday evening.
Police said the Officer Conrad Simpson, a 19-year veteran of the department, was headed north on Kentucky Avenue approaching South Lynhurst Drive when the pedestrian was hit.
According to IMPD, the person was walking in the street and the Officer Simpson didn’t see him.
The department said the officer began performing emergency life-saving procedures and called for assistance. However, emergency personnel arrived and pronounced the person dead at the scene.
The officer did remain on the scene and submitted to a blood draw, which is standard procedure in a fatal crash.
Early indications are, according to the department, that poor visibility led to the crash and not driver impairment.
The deadly incident remains under investigation.
