2 pedestrians hit, killed in Cass County

WALTON, Ind. (WISH/WLFI) — Two men were struck by a vehicle and killed Tuesday night on the south edge of Walton.

According to the Indiana State Police, Zachary Wines, 26, Walton, IN and Bryan Curry, 52, Valparaiso, Indiana were found dead in the roadway of U.S. 35 near Engler Road, just north of Cass County Road 800 South.

Preliminary evidence indicates the men were in the roadway and struck by a northbound vehicle, according to troopers with the Peru post of Indiana State Police.

Investigators say they also found two vehicles with engines running parked on the east side of U.S. 35. Investigators believe those vehicles were driven by Wines and Curry.

The hit-and-run fatalities were reported about 6:50 p.m. and U.S. 35 remained closed south of Walton after 11 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Walton is about 65 miles north of Indianapolis. Census statistics show Walton had about 1,000 residents in 2010 and covered less than a half square mile of land. U.S. 35 runs through Walton and up to the southern edge of Logansport.

The speed limit on U.S. 35 decreases to 35 miles per hour inside Walton town limits.

ISP troopers are awaiting autopsy results on Wines and Curry, and ask for the public’s help in solving the case and finding the person responsible.
