2019 Indy 500: Downtown gets street signs with racers’ names

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The calendar hasn’t turned to May yet but all signs are pointing to it being right around the corner Including street signs downtown promoting the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500.

Tony Kanaan, the 2013 Indianapolis 500 winner, kicked off the driver’s street sign installation on Monday afternoon. Kanaan installed Kanaan Avenue on the southwest corner of Washington Street and Meridian Street. Kanaan said he would not mind if his sign stayed up a little longer than the others.

“First of all, I don’t think I had a name, a street name with my name apart from when we started doing this a couple of years ago and, today, I had the opportunity to actually hang my own name in there, so I kind of talked to the guys in the truck and I told them after the month of May when they take these down and when you guys are taking all the signs out, why don’t you forget that one in there and just leave it there?”

The 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 is May 26 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
