Actor Tom Hanks, former US senator Elizabeth Dole support military caregivers

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Oscar-winner Tom Hanks and former U.S. senator Elizabeth Dole visited Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Wednesday to support military caregivers.

Gov. Eric Holcomb and Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett also were there.

The Elizabeth Dole Foundation is hosting a special two-day celebration for it’s Hidden Heroes Campaign that works to highlight and support those who care for sick or injured veterans.

Dole said, “No one should be isolated and yet we find that our caregiver fellows, so many of them, say, ‘I’ve been totally isolated and just to find one other caregiver has meant the world to me.’”

Hanks said, “This is not a plea for money. This is a plea for activity. This is a plea for involvement. There is a job you do very well that you can do for one of the Hidden Heroes. There’s time you have, there’s a lawn you can mow, there’s a car you can drive, there’s a class that you teach that will go to help the Hidden Heroes.”

Wednesday’s event also worked to discuss and identify ways communities across the country can help local military caregivers.
