Adoption records debate to return to Statehouse

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – State lawmakers say the issue of whether or not to unseal some 50 years of birth records will return to the Statehouse.

On Tuesday, lawmakers voted to again introduce a bill in January that failed in this year’s legislative session.

The bill would unseal birth records for anyone adopted between 1941 and 1994. Starting in 1994, anyone adopted in the state could ask for their birth records as long as their mother had not signed a form to stop that.

The bill would allow anyone to request their records.

Opponents of the bill say a generation of birth mothers may not be prepared for that to happen.
