Aspiring firefighters get hands-on training

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Aspiring firefighters are getting the chance to learn about the job firsthand with live training.

The Wayne Township Fire Department’s Explorers program, made up of teens and young adults from 14 to 21 who want to become firefighters, held a training session on Saturday for the 

The Explorers worked with Wayne Township and Indianapolis fire departments on real scenarios, including getting through tight spaces and obstacles and conducting search-and-rescue missions inside burning buildings.

“This is an opportunity for them to find out if this is something they want to do. They have the ability to learn some of the skills actual firefighters would do,” said Brad Burke, an advisor for the program. 

Burke said this kind of training helps Explorers further their goals of becoming firefighters.
